Open Positions in the Parker Lab

  • We are searching for a postdoc to advance our lab’s work on host–microbe interactions and coevolution. The position is supported by startup funds and offers substantial flexibility to develop an independent research direction aligned with the lab’s interests.

    Potential projects include:

    • How mobile genetic elements drive symbiont-conferred phenotypes (e.g., fungal protection, host plant use, thermal tolerance) in pea aphids

    • Biology of a newly discovered facultative Wolbachia and other heritable bacteria in bed bugs

    • Development of genomic, microscopy, and functional genetic tools in aphids

    • Interactions between bacterial symbionts and viruses, including vectored pathogens, and the roles of the aphid immune system and bacteriocytes in viral transmission

    • Biology of Entomophthorales fungi, including host manipulation, genome evolution, and population genetics in natural populations

We’d be especially interested in colleagues who could see themselves collaborating with other labs at UNC Biology, and who are interested in working across biological scales in a Broad biology department.

  • Prospective graduates could consider applying either through UNC Biology’s graduate program (https://bio.unc.edu/graduate/) or UNC’s BBSP umbrella program (https://bbsp.unc.edu) with applications due this fall. Contact us for more details and guidance on the admissions process.

  • Undergraduates interested in working in the lab should contact Dr. Parker via email. Please tell us about why you are interested in research and your career goals. I strongly advise students not to use chatGPT or other AI to write emails inquiring about undergraduate research positions.
